I guess it's possible it's just a coincidence. But wouldn't the artist have said something like "if you look at the history of my work, you'd see that I'm very fond of circular arcs"? Or really anything at all besides having his mouthpiece say "well, the moon is crescent-y sometimes"?
That said, I'm not at all convinced.
